Qubs win 2006 Jr. Gulls MLK Tournament! Friday afternoon the Qub's played game one against the San Diego Jr. Gulls. The Qubs were prepared for this game out shooting the Jr. Gulls 24 to 13 to earn a 7 tom 0 victory. The Qubs played a solid team game with defenseman Christian Gerrits earning three assists from the point. The Qubs out skated, out hustled and out played the Jr. Gulls, with the Qubs scoring five goals in the second period to put the Gulls away. The Qubs again took control in game two against the Vosha Mustangs out shooting the Mustangs 25 to 11 and behind solid goal tending by Kano Cook earning a 3 to 0 shutout victory. Game 3 against the Jr. Ducks was a run away, with the Qubs out shooting the Jr. Ducks 46 (that's right 46) to 5 and winning 8 to 1. The Jr. Ducks team came into this game undefeated in tournament play in the B squirt division. This Jr. Ducks team also beat the San Diego Jr. Gulls in this tournament, but despite their skills and teamwork, they were no match for the Qubs speed. Quickly taking control of the game the Qubs played with confidence, with great passing, using the points and tenacious back-checking to squelch any chances the Jr. Ducks would get. By the end of the game, 10 Qubs had either scored or assisted in the 8 to 1 victory, great to see a total team effort. Game 4 for the championship featured the undefeated Qubs against the San Diego Jr. Gulls who made it to the championship game by the points differential in their games with the Mustangs and Jr. Ducks. It looked like it was going to be another Qub run away, when Austin Nichols scored 23 seconds into the game! After Nichols goal the Gulls took control of the game out shooting the Qubs 10 to 7 in the first period. Qubs goal tender Kano Cook frustrated the Jr. Gulls with several great saves including stopping a breakaway. Six minutes after the Qubs scored the Gulls tied the game at one one and kept the pressure on for the rest of the first period. Period two was back and forth with neither team being able to get the puck past goal tenders Cook (10 saves in period 2) and Jr. Gulls goal tender Brody Cavataio (12 saves in period 2). With 1:31 left in the second period the Qubs pressured with Christian Gerrits coming in from the point to take a pass from behind the net from Garret Turner to take the lead 2 to 1. The lead was short lived, 20 seconds later after wining the face-off, the Gulls tied the score on a goal from Jake Smith, sending the game to the third period knotted up at two two. Teamwork again was the highlight in period three when Drake DeBerry took a perfect pass from Jared Lawrence and put one over the shoulder of Cavataio which lit up the Qub players and fans. From then on, the Qub's out hustled the Jr. Gulls, five minutes later Christian Gerrits again made a great play at the line, holding the puck in the Jr. Gulls zone, passing the puck to Jared Lawrence in the corner who showed a lot of poise skating into position to shoot, scoring on Cavataio to give the Qubs some breathing room. With 6:54 to go Wesley Varaso scored the fifth Qub goal and the game was out of reach for the Jr. Gulls. The Qubs finished the tournament undefeated, out scoring their opponents 23 to 3.
